We're Hiring!
Boston Center for Community Ownership (BCCO) is hiring a Small Business Technical Assistance Provider or “Co-op Organizer” to provide hands-on business support to worker-owned cooperatives and other small businesses in our region. The ideal candidate has practical experience working in small businesses as an entrepreneur, manager, or technical assistance provider. Co-op Organizers must have strong business and financial skills as well as interpersonal skills that include empowering community members to work together to build cooperative businesses and achieve their collective economic goals.
BCCO is a worker self-directed non-profit that takes an organizing approach to cooperative business development. Our mission is to transform our local economy into one that is vibrant, sustainable, multicultural, humane, equitable, and resilient. We do this by:
- supporting community members who have been marginalized by the mainstream economy to build cooperative businesses;
- ensuring that co-ops offer positive and empowering work environments; and
- building an inclusive movement for cooperative ownership.
Responsibilities:
- Provide technical assistance to small businesses, including support with business planning, bookkeeping, financial management, sales, marketing, governance, and legal and tax compliance
- Facilitate workshops on both small business and cooperative topics (like member rights and responsibilities and board governance)
- Collaborate with community partners, service providers, funders, and financiers to support cooperatives to achieve their community, business, and financial goals
- Manage business clients and internal projects by developing workplans and budgets, completing objectives, and documenting the processes and results
- Participate in BCCO’s worker-led democratic management structure by participating in internal management meetings, contributing to the administration of the organization, and becoming a member of BCCO after a candidacy period (members are eligible to vote for the Board of Directors and serve on the Board)
Requirements:
- Experience working in a small business as a bookkeeper or financial manager, or in another management capacity
- Proficiency with business software including Microsoft and/or Google spreadsheets, documents, and presentations, and QuickBooks Online, and familiarity with a variety of CRM, point of sale, and project management software services
- Strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex business and financial topics so that they are easily understood
- Eagerness to develop additional skills in support of small businesses and to deepen your understanding of the cooperative model
- Cultural competencies related to one or more of Boston’s BIPOC and immigrant communities
- Commitment to BCCO’s values of empowerment and respect for low-income workers and entrepreneurs and to BCCO’s mission to build a cooperative economy
Other qualities that would strengthen your application:
- Experience working in cooperatives or other democratic organizations
- Experience in the building trades, including with general and specialty contractors, energy efficiency businesses, landscapers, and related fields
- Experience preparing marketing materials, grant applications, or similar professional written materials
- Fluency in a language commonly spoken in the Boston area, such as Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Vietnamese, or others
- Coursework in accounting, business, economic development, or public policy
Candidates must be able to commute to our office in Dorchester, MA on a weekly (or more frequent) basis. We follow a 9-5 schedule (one or more days in-office) with flexibility in scheduling and the need to occasionally work on evenings or weekends. Candidates must also be able to travel to client businesses in the Boston region and occasionally elsewhere in Massachusetts, as needed.
This is an exempt position for 35 hours per week (full-time) with a starting salary of $76,500. BCCO offers scheduled annual salary increases based on job tenure and cost of living in our area. BCCO also offers paid time off, holidays, and an employer contribution to health, dental, vision, and other optional insurance products. Mileage reimbursements, travel, lodging, and per diem are provided for training and conferences.
BCCO is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, national origin, veteran status, or any other basis covered by appropriate law. Research suggests that qualified women, Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color (BIPOC) may self-select out of opportunities if they don’t meet 100% of the job requirements.
